B.S. in Music Education - Vocal-General Music Education Concentration

Curricular requirements may be revised due to changes in state licensure requirements, and therefore, students should work with their adviser to ensure they are following the correct program plan.

Music Education Major Requirements 

Students must complete the required courses in Music Education (78 units) and the requirements for one of the following concentrations: Instrumental Music Education (24 units) or Vocal-General Music Education (24 units) for a total of 102 units. Music Education majors must complete minimum 51 upper-level (300-400) units in MUSC (Music), Music Applied (MUSA), and/or Music Education (MUED) courses toward the major. 24 of these upper-level units must be completed at Towson University.

Keyboard students are required to complete Solo and Ensemble Accompanying (MUSA 274 / MUSA 474) for at least 1 of the 2 units of ensembles.

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) 150 full days of practicum experiences in diverse settings and supervised by mentor teachers.  The practicum experiences occur when students are fully admitted to the Music Education program as follows:

  • Junior year – spring term (2 days per week – Tuesdays and Thursdays)
  • Senior year – fall term (3 days per week – Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays)
  • Senior year – spring term (5 days per week – Mondays through Fridays)
